Western Marine Customs Destroys N1.2 billion Worth of cannabis sativa

Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has destroyed N1.2 billion worth of cannabis sativa seized on the high sea through intelligence .Destruction of the offensive items was carried out by the Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Command, Comptroller Olugboyega Peters, along with his officers in the presence of other security agencies, as well as Journalists.The exercise took place along Badagry axis of Lagos, outside the Command’s head office at Apapa. The mind boggling seizure, which has being in the news since April 21, 2020, is the largest single seizure of dangerous drugs ever recorded by any Command at sea, in the history of Nigeria Customs.According to Peters, destruction of the drugs was in tandem with the law.His assertions, “The law demands that if suspects are arrested, they should be handed over to appropriate agency, to carry out further investigation, to unravel the syndicates behind illegal smuggling of such dangerous drugs into the economic environment.“If no suspect is arrested in connection with the seized drugs, the items must be destroyed in the presence of other government agencies”.The CAC frowned, “Destruction of these drugs is vital, because abuse of such drugs can lead to increase of criminalities in the country.“Also, smuggling of such drugs is against the extant laws and has serious health hazards on those consuming if. For instance, consumption of these dangerous drugs can even break-down a person’s nervous system”.Comptroller Peters warned that there is no hiding place for smugglers, as his team will leave no stone unturned in curbing their menace.
